How to prepare for your child’s career

We live in a world of many different opportunities with people excelling and competing in everything that you can think about. Right from running small start ups or shops, to make a niche in the creative industry, everything is booming. In a world like this, it can become very difficult for children to understand and decide what they want to do with their careers. Their minds are like butterflies when they are young. Everything seems fascinating. Hence, it is our job as parents and teachers to help them evaluate their choices, to expose them to opportunities and to understand what they are good at and what they can potentially pursue. That said, it is not our job to decide what they should do. Our job is merely to understand their potential.

So, what is it that parents must do in order to help their children decide the kind of careers they should be looking forward to? We, at Little Genius, think that this is a question that every parent thinks about once in a while. Hence, we have come up with some pointers that may help you to prepare for your children’s career.

1

Engage in activities that can develop career skills

The idea here is to ensure that the activities that you are choosing are fun and captivating. Your children’s personalities and talents can work as clues for the selection of activities. Some examples of these activities are: Scavenger hunts, escape rooms, company tours, coding workshops, public speaking classes, etc.

2

Create resumes

You might wonder why young children would need resumes. However, by making a resume, students can showcase their talents and discover resources and scholarships and connect with talent seekers. Talent seekers tend to follow the ones that they may potentially recruit someday.

3

Teach them to think like an entrepreneur

Not every child will grow up and run a business, but it is important for all children to learn and think like an entrepreneur. This will help them build their soft skills. There are employers out there who believe that soft skills are as important as technical skills and sometimes even more. To enhance these skills, you can introduce activities like management of pocket money, making decisions with the family, doing household chores, practically assessing different situations, solving puzzles, etc.

4

Help them apply for internships, volunteerships or observerships

Exposure is one of the most important things in helping them build careers. Expose them to different opportunities and let them select what they want. You can explore internships or volunteerships for your children based on what they like to do. They could intern with a tech company or volunteer with an animal-based NGO. The sky's the limit when it comes to exposing them to different opportunities.

5

Encourage your children to find their tribe

We all have our tribes. We work with people who have similar mindsets. It is important that children have their tribes too, so that they can grow together. Challenge your children to get out of their comfort zone and find their people. This can positively affect how big they can dream and what all they can achieve.

6

Be patient and encouraging

It is not easy to mold a child’s brain in the correct direction. It is also not easy for children to figure out what they want to do with their future when they don’t know what is waiting out in the world for them. It can get scary and confusing. Things may take a million attempts to fall into place. But the key to ace life is a little bit of encouragement and lots of patience. Don’t panic at the slightest of failure. Sit back, relax and enjoy the process of helping your children find their calling.

We, at Little Genius, with our leadership courses in Ahmedabad and Vadodara, Reading Circle Program, Junior CEOs Program, Analytical reasoning classes, etc. also try to help children in finding their futures. We hope this article helps you.
