Why Does My Child Get the Right Final Answer but Still Lose Marks for Method?

Your child solves the problem, arrives at the correct number, and still comes home with marks deducted. It"s one of the most confusing things to explain to a child, because from the outside it looks like being penalized for being right. But it isn"t random, and it isn"t the teacher being harsh. It comes down to what a math answer sheet is actually being assessed for, which is not just the final number.


What Schools Are Actually Assessing

In CBSE and most Indian school marking schemes, a single question"s marks are typically split across distinct components rather than awarded as one lump sum for a correct answer. For a 3-mark question, it"s common for the correct formula to carry 1 mark, the correct substitution of values into that formula to carry another mark, and the final answer (often with correct units) to carry the last mark, each awarded independently of the others. That means a child can lose marks for skipping the substitution step even if their final number is completely correct, because the examiner is grading three separate pieces of evidence, not one.

This works in a child"s favor too: CBSE"s step-wise marking also means a child can earn partial credit for a correct method and correct intermediate steps even if they make an arithmetic slip and land on the wrong final answer, as long as the underlying approach is valid. Marks, in other words, are attached to demonstrated reasoning on the page, not to whatever reasoning happened silently in your child"s head.


Why Children Skip Steps in the First Place

This usually isn"t carelessness. Working memory, the mental space a child uses to hold numbers and sub-steps in mind while working through a problem, is still developing through the primary and middle school years, and it has real limits. For many children, it"s genuinely easier to hold a two- or three-step calculation entirely in their head than to also spend mental effort writing each intermediate step down while solving. The steps aren"t missing because the child doesn"t know them; they"re missing from the page because writing them down competes for the same limited mental space the child is using to actually solve the problem.

There"s a second, quieter cause worth naming too: sometimes skipped steps are a sign that a method was learned as a memorized shortcut rather than built from real understanding. A child who deeply understands why each step is needed tends to write it down almost automatically, because putting it on paper mirrors how they"re actually thinking through the problem. A child who has memorized a fast route to the answer, without the underlying reasoning attached, often has nothing structured to write down in between.


A Concrete Example

Take a simple two-step word problem: "Riya has 3 boxes of 8 pencils each. She gives away 5 pencils. How many pencils does she have left?" A child who jumps straight to "19" has the right answer. A child who writes "3 × 8 = 24" and then "24 − 5 = 19" has demonstrated two separate pieces of mathematical reasoning on the page: correctly identifying that this is a multiplication situation, and correctly identifying that this is a subtraction situation. If the marking scheme allocates separate marks for identifying the operations and for the final computation, as CBSE-style schemes typically do, the child who only wrote "19" may walk away with just the final-answer mark, even though their thinking may have been entirely correct.


What This Means Beyond the Exam

It"s worth being honest with your child about this too: the goal of writing out steps isn"t just to please an examiner. The habit of externalizing reasoning, actually writing down what you"re doing and why, is also what lets a child (or a teacher, or a parent helping with homework) catch a mistake partway through instead of only discovering it at the wrong final answer. A child who can only get the right answer by doing everything mentally has no way to self-check, and no way for anyone else to spot exactly where a genuine misunderstanding, rather than a careless slip, might be hiding.
